Johnston, George: Cséplés (Thrash in Hungarian)

Portre of Johnston, George
Portre of Tótfalusi István

Back to the translator

Thrash (English)

The green we see
from our kitchen:
Fred's oatfield
aging now, turning bronze.

His old thrashing mill
gone to ground,
hears of a sale,
back home again with another new one.

All afternoon hammer the pulleys
until they budge;
glum kind of an afternoon, cussed at,
spoiling to rain.

Next fine day, coupled up
the jaws accept the proffered oat bundles
and thrash them, thrash, thrash, thrash,
forked load after forked

load, what's left of summer
We lean against the truck, finger the grain,
and drink Fred's apple wine
for the truth in it.

Cséplés (Hungarian)

A zöld, amit látunk
a konyhánkból:
Fred zabföldje,
már bronzszínbe hajlik.

Vén cséplőgépe
lerobbant rég;
hall egy eladóról:
hazajön egy újabb vén tragaccsal.

Álló délután zötyögnek a csigák,
míg csak moccanni bírnak;
nyomott délután, köpnivaló,
beáll az eső is.

Másnap ragyog, a gép feláll,
torka nyeli a zabkévéket,
és csépeli, csépeli, csépeli
egyik villányit a másik

után, ami a nyárból megmaradt.
A teherautónak dőlve morzsoljuk a magot
és Fred almaborát isszuk,
mert borban az igazság.
