Gogarty, Oliver: Per Iter Tenebricosum* (Per Iter Tenebricosum in Hungarian)

Portre of Gogarty, Oliver
Portre of Hárs Ernő

Per Iter Tenebricosum (English)

Enough! Why should a man bemoan
A Fate that leads the natural way?
Or think himself a worthier one
Than those who braved it in their day?
If only gladiators died
Or heroes, Death would be his pride;
But have not little maidens gone,
And Lesbia's sparrow - all alone?

Per Iter Tenebricosum* (Hungarian)

Elég! Mért döntsön férfiút
szomorúságba végzete?
Mért volna többre jogosult,
mint az, ki rég dacol vele?
Ha csak bajnokvért ontanál,
még dicsekedhetnél, halál;
de lányt nem öltél, s madara
miatt nem búsult Lesbia?
