Sweeney, Matthew: A kutyája (His Dog in Hungarian)

Portre of Sweeney, Matthew

His Dog (English)

Where is this dog he sees and I can't?
Why is he pointing to the window,
then beckoning me to rise from bed
and herd his sheep back to the hills?
All around me sick men sleep through
his hissed commands, his tearing cries
that the night-nurse runs to calm -

a calm that night-lights can't prolong,
or daylight either, though his daughters
when they come with wills that lack
his signature, don't get a sound
or a move from him, don't get the farm,
although they plead and squabble.
Where is his dog now, where is it?

A kutyája (Hungarian)

Hol a kutyája, akit csak én nem
látok? Miért int az ablak felé,
keljek fel, tereljem vissza
a birkáit a hegyre? Köröttem
csupa beteg alussza át sziszegő
parancsait, gyötrő kiáltozását,
az éjszakás nővér futva csitítja –

csöndjét az éjszaka fénye nem őrzi,
sem a napfény, bár amikor jönnek
a lányai, hozzák a végrendelet
aláíratlan példányait, egy hangot,
egy moccanást nem húznak ki belőle,
nemhogy a tanyát, hiába civakodnak.
Hol a kutyája, hol lehet?
