The author broods in his study,
The housewife dreams in her flat:
Since Mommer and Popper were most improper,
There ought to be a book in that.

But don't write a book about Mother!
Don't write a book about Mum!
We all know Mumsy was vague and clumsy,
Dithering, drunken and dumb.

There may be money in Mother,
And possibly a movie, too -
But some little mite is learning to write
To write a little book about you.

Öreg este, de ég a lámpa,
s ki nem alszik éjjelen át:

Papa, Mama emlékiratát.

Ne írj soha könyvet Apáról,
sose írd meg a jó Öreget,
jobb nem kipakolnod, hogy lett agya bomlott,
s milyen murisan dilizett;

minek emlegetned a rácsot,
mit az ápolója bezárt:
fiacskád -megeshet - máris írni kezdett
rólad egy kis memoárt.

Elkapja az ihlet a szerzőt,
ábrándoz a hű feleség -
Anyácska, Apácska, Istenke bocsássa...
s egy könyvhöz ennyi elég.

De ne írj soha könyvet Anyáról,
sose foglald könyvbe Mamit;
tudjuk mi: Mamuska csúf volt, buta, lusta,
korhely, süket és magahitt.

Lehet, pénz fekszik Anyában,
sőt még egy film se kizárt:
de egy kicsi lány már írni tanul ám,
ki majd rólad ír memoárt!
