Lowell, James Russell: Kossuth (Kossuth in Hungarian)

Portre of Lowell, James Russell

Kossuth (English)

A race of nobles may die out,

A royal line may leave no heir;

Wise Nature sets no guards about

Her pewter plate and wooden ware.

But they fail not, the kinglier breed,

Who starry diadems attain;

To dungeon, axe, and stake succeed

Heirs of the old heroic strain.

The zeal of Nature never cools,

Nor is she thwarted of her ends;

When gapped and dulled her cheaper tools,

Then she a saint and prophet spends.

Land of the Magyars! though it be

The tyrant may relink his chain,

Already thine the victory,

As the just Future measures gain.

Thou hast succeeded, thou hast won

The deathly travail’s amplest worth;

A nation’s duty thou hast done,

Giving a hero to our earth.

And he, let come what will of woe,

Hath saved the land he strove to save;

No Cossack hordes, no traitor’s blow,

Can quench the voice shall haunt his grave.

"I Kossuth am: O Future, thou

That clear’st the just and blott’st the vile,

O’er this small dust in reverence bow,

Remembering what I was erewhile.

"I was the chosen trump wherethrough

Our God sent forth awakening breath;

Came chains? Came death? The strain He blew

Sounds on, outliving chains and death."

Kossuth (Hungarian)

Érhet nemes faj is korai véget,

Van büszke ág, mely nem hagy örököst;

A bölcs Természet nem tesz különbséget

Hitvány fatányér és bronz-váza közt.

De azért mindig lesz királyi fajta.

Csillagra vágyó, egeket verő;

Börtön, karó, bárd nem foghat ki rajta -

A régi hérosz-vér meg’ visszajő.

A nagy Természet fárad minden korba’

S a cél mindig szeme előtt dereng;

Eldobja szerszámát, ha éle csorba,

Újat vesz - szentet, prófétát teremt!

Oh magyaroknak zsarnok-verte népe!

Hiába csörg most rajtad a bilincs:

A jövő századok ítéletébe’

Rajtad kivül győző e harcba’ nincs!

A sikered te dúsan learattad,

Jutalmat nyert a gyász, mely téged ölt:

Legtöbbet adtál, mit csak nemzet adhat.

Mert tőled egy héroszt kapott a föld.

És ő, ki szent zászlód kezébe’ hordta,

Meg is mentett, ma bármi vész gyötör,

Mert el nem némithatja muszka horda

A szót, mely majdan sírjából kitör:

„Kossuth vagyok! Oh Jövendő, amelybe’

Törpékre éj vár, igazakra fény:

E por fölött hódolj letérdepelve,

És emlékezve rá, mi voltam én:

A harsona, min át az Isten küldte

A földre le az ébresztés dalát!

Békó, halál jött rá? Mindegy! A kürtje

Tovább zeng s túlél békót és halált!”
