Jóna Dávid: Little Orphans (Árvácskák in English)

Portre of Jóna Dávid

Back to the translator

Árvácskák (Hungarian)

Csúnya kicsi lány
fűszállal játszott unottan.
Rádőlt a nyári meleg,
újrasírta a menhelyeket
elhagyottan, ülve a homokban.

Bogáncshajú s esetlen,
zavart és fél, mint a többi árva.
Hóvállú vézna szentek
értetlenül merengenek
minden képzelt anyukára...

Little Orphans (English)

An ugly little girl
played with a blade of grass, bored.
Summer heat poured on her,
she cried anew over shelter-homes,
sitting in the sand, forlorn.

Thistle-haired and clumsy,
confused and scared like all orphans.
Snow-shouldered, skinny little saints
with hollow eyes gaze at
every fancied mother…
