Huba Ildikó: Life middle-aged (Életközépkor in English)

Portre of Huba Ildikó

Életközépkor (Hungarian)

A te szerelmed?
Ronda katedrális.
Nem fér el családi
fotográfián,
lemondásokból
magad hordtad össze,
s benn végtelen
unalmas litániák,
színes ablakai
sosem készültek el,
ha tűz a nap,
csak nő a fekete árny,
tornyairól meg a
vízköpő rémek
pikkelyes szája
vicsorog rám,
nyelvüket öltik,
utánam rikoltják:
Te nem ismersz mást,
csak a hiányt!

Az én szerelmem?
Siket gyóntatópap.
Jéghideg padok közt
csoszog bután,
imát még sosem
mondott miattad,
és nem nyújt se ostyát,
se feloldozást.

Life middle-aged (English)

Your love?
Is an ugly cathedral.
It doesn’t fit in
any family frame,
you’ve hoarded it up
of your own surrenders,
and filled it with boring
litanies endless,
its marigold windows
has never been built in,
only black shadows grow
with the light of the day,
and from its towers
the hideous muzzles
of gargoyles snarl
with their tongues all out,
and shriek after me:
“You don’t know a thing
but your own misery!”

My love?
Is a confessor deafened.
He shambles dumbly
on aisles stone-cold,
he has not ever said
for you any prayer,
nor offered a wafer
or has a vice absolved.
