Rekviem Bözödújfaluért (Hungarian)

Aztán eloszlott a tömeg,
széthordták az utolsó házat is -
akár a cserépszilánkok,
álmaink az utcán hevertek;
a nevek, mint megannyi sikoly.
Sosem hittük volna,
hogy emlékoszlopra kerülnek:
örökre és beláthatatlanul.

Requiem For Bözödújfalu (English)

Then the crowd dispersed,
the last house was taken apart -
just like pot-sherds,
our dreams lay on streets;
the names like many screams.
We’d never have thought
they’d be on memorial stands:
for ever and unforeseen.

(Bözödújfalu is a devastated village in Rumania, it has become the symbol of village-destruction, - in 1988 it was flooded as a reservoir was being built. Church towers remained standing for years even in the water.)
