Kamarás Klára: Elegy (Elégia in English)

Portre of Kamarás Klára

Elégia (Hungarian)

Ott ült az ablak mellett.
Emlékszem, varrt szegény.
A tű parányi sebet ejtett
napbarnított kezén.

Tizennyolc éves voltam,
ki még semmit sem látott,
s megváltani készültem
gőgösen a világot.
Ahogy anyámra néztem,
egyszerre megviláglott:
Nem csak kereszthalálért,
szürke napok sodráért is
lehet valaki áldott.

Elegy (English)

She sat beside the window
- poor wee one - sewing, and
the needle made a tiny wound on
her sun-tanned sewing-hand.

I was eighteen and had not
seen anything: a dreamer,
who'd prepared quite haughtily
to be the world's redeemer.
As I looked at my mother
- came like the dawn, I could tell -
one could be blessed not just
for a death by crucifixion,
but drift of grey days as well.
