Falu Tamás: Evening Prayer (Esti ima in English)

Portre of Falu Tamás

Esti ima (Hungarian)

Ne fájjon a lelkem,
ne fájjon a testem,
legyen, ki felemel,
amikor elestem.

Amit méznek érzek,
epévé ne váljék,
kövessen a béke,
mint jóságos árnyék.

S ha majd jő a halál,
szóljon hozzám szépen,
s ne a hátán vigyen,
hanem az ölében.

Evening Prayer (English)

Let me have no pain in my soul,
in my body no pain, no sore,
let there be someone to help me up,
when I’ve fallen over before.

What I taste sweet-scented honey
let not turn into bitter gall,
let peace accompany me
like a benevolent shadow.

And then when death comes to take me,
let it address me tenderly,
and let it - instead of its back
carry me in its lap, embracing.
