Koldust, ha látsz, és látsz bizonnyal,

Ajtód s szíved ne légyen zárva;

Fejed ne fordítsd el iszonnyal.

Mert rongyos, piszkos a ruhája.

Ki volt, mi volt? ne tudakoljad,

Fájdalmit ezzel is tetézve,

S amit ad jobb kezed, úgy adjad,

Hogy balkezed ne vegye észre.

Gondold, hogy e szegénynek is volt

A földi jókban része dúsan;

Hogy volt idő, mikor az égbolt

Ő rája sem borúla búsan.

Gondold: a sors mely változékony,

Király is lett koldus árva…

Más búja iránt légy fogékony,

Ajtód s szíved ne légyen zárva!
