Ady Endre: Hosanna those who trust in sorrow (Hozsánna bízó síróknak in English)

Portre of Ady Endre

Hozsánna bízó síróknak (Hungarian)

Mindig volt titkos, valamis

Názárethje az emberi Jónak,

Honnan elindult könnyesen,

Dagadón, szánva bús milliókat

És soha nem ölt meg iszap

Bátor, nagy vizű s tiszta folyókat.

Folyók, szívek, ne féljetek

S bénult szívem se, te, ki eddig

Nem merted elég könnyesen

Mélyítni szent folyóknak a medrit.

Az emberek a siratást

A Jó álmáért is megérdemlik.

Dagadjatok meg, szent folyók,

Szivek, kik még hajléki a Jónak,

Sirjátok ki könnyeitek,

Hoszánna ma a bízó síróknak,

Hozsánna, bizó Tegnapunk

S hozsánna neked szent árú Holnap.

Hosanna those who trust in sorrow (English)

The Good in man has always had

Within its Nazareth some cryptic code,

From whence it started swelling up

With tears for millions with grief for a load

And silting has never destroyed

Big-watered, courageous rivers that flowed.

Rivers and hearts, don't be afraid,

And you, my palsied heart, don't weaken,

You had not dared with tears enough

The holy rivers' beds to deepen.

Men deserve some tears of mourning

For all the Good that they're dreaming even.

You, holy rivers all, do swell,

You, hearts which still are for Good a burrow.

Keep crying out the tears you have,

Hosanna weepers who trust in sorrow,

Hosanna, trusting Yesterday,

Hosanna holy flood of Tomorrow.
