Ady Endre: Leave the village (El a faluból in English)

Portre of Ady Endre

El a faluból (Hungarian)

A kis harang a régi,
Mely belezúg a csöndbe,
A szürkeség a régi,
Fölé virít a tavasz.

Minden, minden a régi,
De én hol élek, járok?
Nem voltam ilyen messze,
Nem voltam soha, soha.

Belehalok, ha mondják,
Hogy én itt szálltam útra,
Megtagadom a csókot,
Amely útra indított.

Én a bolondos zajnak,
Én a cifra városnak
Vagyok a kóbor lelke,
Ne gyalázz meg hát, falu.

Ó, kapj fel innen, Város,
Ragadj el innen, Város:
Kik messze kiröpültek,
Sohse térjenek haza.

Leave the village (English)

The little bell's the old one
That peels into the silence,
The greyness is the old one,
And above that blooms the spring

All are, yes all, as they were,
But where is my life, my place?
I have not been this far yet,
No, never this far before.

I’d die, when they are saying,
That my road had started here,
Even that kiss would I deny,
Which farewelled me as I left.

I am the straying soul of
Those daft and zany noises,
The city: loud and tawdry,
So, village, don’t revile me.

City, do come and snatch me up,
City, do take me, take me:
For those, who ventured far should
Not ever come home again.
