Hárs Ernő: Evening Blackbird (Esti rigó in English)

Portre of Hárs Ernő

Esti rigó (Hungarian)

Csak így,
egy pőre oszlop tetején,
csőrrel az égnek,
csak így igaz az ének,
mikor a test egy percre csupa lélek,
s feledve hosszú böjtöt,
múlt és jövő telet,
ujjong, mint hangot öltött
pehelysúly ékezet,
marokba férő örökkévalóság,
az esti szürkület közömbös takaróját
magukra húzó halandók felett.

Evening Blackbird (English)

Just so,
on top of a bare pole,
beak up to the sky,
the song is true only so,
when body for a moment is mere soul,
forgets the long fasting,
past and future winter,
it jubilates, like a feather-weight
acute clad in sounds,
eternity that fits in a palm,
above mortals who draw evening dusk’s
impassive blanket on themselves.
