József Attila: Preferred a spike more than a flower (Karóval jöttél in English)

Portre of József Attila

Karóval jöttél (Hungarian)

Karóval jöttél, nem virággal,
feleseltél a másvilággal,
aranyat igértél nagy zsákkal
anyádnak és most itt csücsülsz,

mint fák tövén a bolondgomba
(igy van rád, akinek van, gondja),
be vagy zárva a Hét Toronyba
és már sohasem menekülsz.

Tejfoggal kőbe mért haraptál?
Mért siettél, ha elmaradtál?
Miért nem éjszaka álmodtál?
Végre mi kellett volna, mondd?

Magadat mindig kitakartad,
sebedet mindig elvakartad,
híres vagy, hogyha ezt akartad.
S hány hét a világ? Te bolond.

Szerettél? Magához ki fűzött?
Bujdokoltál? Vajjon ki űzött?
Győzd, ami volt, ha ugyan győzöd,
se késed nincs, se kenyered.

Be vagy a Hét Toronyba zárva,
örülj, ha jut tüzelőfára,
örülj, itt van egy puha párna,
hajtsd le szépen a fejedet.

Preferred a spike more than a flower (English)

Preferred a spike more than a flower
answering back to the hereafter
promised a sack of gold to mother
Doing nothing now you squat here

On the tree stem like toadstool you sit
(nobody cares, they see you like this)
To Seven Towers you are locked in,
Never forget there's no escape.

Why did you bite the stone with milk tooth?
Why did you run when you were too slow?
Why did you not dream nighttime, you should've?
What did you whished for, say, at last?

Poor yourself you always uncovered
Scrathing the healing wound you suffered
You're famous if that's what you wanted
And where did you get with that? You fool.

Why did you love? Who has responded?
Why did you hide? Who was the pursuer?
Get on, if you can get on better,
You have no bread no knife this time

To Seven Towers you are locked in
Be happy you can still buy kindling
Be happy, here comes a soft padding
Be a good child, lower your head.
