Ime, hát megleltem hazámat,

a földet, ahol nevemet

hibátlanul irják fölébem,

ha eltemet, ki eltemet.

 

E föld befogad, mint a persely.

Mert nem kell (mily sajnálatos!)

a háborúból visszamaradt

húszfilléres, a vashatos.

 

Sem a vasgyűrű, melybe vésve

a szép szó áll, hogy uj világ,

jog, föld. - Törvényünk háborús még

s szebbek az arany karikák.

 

Egyedül voltam én sokáig.

Majd eljöttek hozzám sokan.

Magad vagy, mondták; bár velük

voltam volna én boldogan.

 

Igy éltem s voltam én hiába,

megállapithatom magam.

Bolondot játszottak velem

s már halálom is hasztalan.

 

Mióta éltem, forgószélben

próbáltam állni helyemen.

Nagy nevetség, hogy nem vétettem

többet, mint vétettek nekem.

 

Szép a tavasz és szép a nyár is,

de szebb az ősz s legszebb a tél,

annak, ki tűzhelyet, családot,

már végképp másoknak remél.

Y bien, al fin he encontrado a mi patria,

a mi tierra en la cual, sin un error,

mi nombre escribiría sobre mí

si me enterrara el enterrador.

 

La tierra –una alcancía– me recibe.

Ya no se necesitan, ¡ay, qué pena!,

aquellos cuatro o cinco centavitos

que nos fueron quedando de la guerra,

 

ni el anillo de hierro en que grabaron

tanta bellaza: Tierra, Mundo Nuevo,

Derecho. Aún es guerrera nuestra ley

y los anillos de oro son más bellos.

 

Durante mucho tiempo estuve solo

pero después muchos se me acercaron.

“Estás solo”, decían, aunque hubiese

–de corazón– querido acompañarlos.

 

Así he vivido, vanamente, así.

Yo mismo puedo comprobarlo, pero

ahora sé que también mi muerte es vana.

Igual que de un bufón de mí se rieron.

 

Desde mi nacimiento quisiste estar

en mi lugar, metido en la tormenta.

Es ridículo que yo no haya hecho

más dano del que a mí mismo me hicieran.

 

Hermosos son verano, primavera

y otoño, y el invierno es más hermoso

para el que anhela ver hogar, familia,

definitivamente para otros.
