József Attila: Mum (Mama in English)

Portre of József Attila

Mama (Hungarian)

Már egy hete csak a mamára
gondolok mindíg, meg-megállva.
Nyikorgó kosárral ölében,
ment a padlásra, ment serényen.

Én még őszinte ember voltam,
ordítottam, toporzékoltam.
Hagyja a dagadt ruhát másra.
Engem vigyen föl a padlásra.

Csak ment és teregetett némán,
nem szidott, nem is nézett énrám
s a ruhák fényesen, suhogva,
keringtek, szálltak a magosba.

Nem nyafognék, de most már késő,
most látom, milyen óriás ő –
szürke haja lebben az égen,
kékítőt old az ég vizében.

Mum (English)

For this past week I had only thought
of mum as I haltingly walked.
She went, basket creaking in her lap,
up to the attic, brisk step by step.

Back then I was a sincere fellow,
I'd fly into rages, I'd bellow.
Let someone else carry, I would whine,
that washing up to the attic-line.

She went, hung the clothes out quietly;
she didn't scold or even look at me,
and the washing, glistening, rustling,
flew up skywards, fluttering spinning.

I wouldn't whimper now but it's too late;
now I see she is truly great,
on the sky her grey hair flutters,
stirring blue into heaven's waters.
