Kosztolányi Dezső: For my wife... (Feleségemnek... in English)

Portre of Kosztolányi Dezső
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Feleségemnek... (Hungarian)

Megszoktalak, akár a levegőt,

bármerre nézek, mindenütt te vagy,

szekrényem alján, a fiókjaimban,

az agyvelőmben, és nem veszlek észre.

De múltkor este, amikor bejöttél

szobámba, s mondtál valamit nekem,

sok év után egyszerre ráocsudtam,

hogy itt vagy, és szavadra sem figyelve

ámulva néztelek. Szemem lehunytam.

Ezt hajtogattam csöndesen magamban:

"Megszoktam őt, akár a levegőt,

Ő adja nékem a lélegzetet."

For my wife... (English)

I became used to you as I did to air,

wherever I look, everywhere it's you,

in the bottom of my wardrobe, my drawers,

my brain, and I don't notice you.

But the other night when you came

into my room and said something to me,

after many years I became aware that you

are here, and not even listening to what you said,

astonished, I looked at you. I closed my eyes

and kept repeating quietly to myself:

"I became used to her as I did to air,

she gives my breath to me."
