Pilinszky János: Though My Colour's Black (Bár színem fekete in English)

Portre of Pilinszky János
Portre of N. Ullrich Katalin

Back to the translator

Bár színem fekete (Hungarian)

Végűl mindíg Isten útját követtem,
bár színem fekete.
Ezért, ha egyszer elfogadtatom,
úgy leszek az üdvözültek sorában,
mint leeresztett sötét zászló,
becsavart lobogó,
szótlanúl és jelentés nélkűl,
és mindeneknél boldogabban.

Though My Colour's Black (English)

After all, I always followed God’s ways,
though my colour’s black.
So, if one day I’m accepted,
I’ll line up among the saintly
as a dark flag lowered,
a rolled up banner,
wordless and without meaning,
and so much happier than all the others.
