Reményik Sándor: The Christmas tree sings (A karácsonyfa énekel in English)

Portre of Reményik Sándor

A karácsonyfa énekel (Hungarian)

Ha szűk szoba: hadd legyen szűk szoba.
A szűk szobában is terem öröm,
Gyúl apró gyertya ínség idején,
Óh csak ne legyen sorsom bús közöny,
Óh csak legyek a fény forrása én,
Apró gyermekek bálványozott fája,
Én az idegen, én a jövevény,
Égő fenyőfa, égő áldozat,
Akit az Isten ősi otthonából
Emberek örömére elhozat.
Csak rajzolódjék mélabús árnyékom
Imbolyogjon a szűk szobák falán,
Mindegy, hogy mi lesz velem azután.

The Christmas tree sings (English)

Should the room be tiny, then so be it.
In small rooms, too, joy finds a place to be,
The candles lit are small in times of need,
Don't let my lot be rueful apathy,
But let me be the source of light, I plead,
That tree that tiny children idolize,
I who am stranger, I, one newly come,
Burning oblation, pine tree lit by flame,
Sent to mankind to bring it gladness, joy
That from our God's ancient dwelling came.
Just let my wobbling, gloomy shadow fall
Upon the walls of tiny rooms, and hence,
What may befall me, is of no consequence.
