Orbán Ottó: Illness, medications: life around fifty (Betegség, gyógyszerek: Élet ötven felé in English)

Matisse palettáját veszem magamhoz minden étkezéskor:
tabletták, kapszulák, rikító, fauve színek;
az élet színképe fakul, nyers festékkel javítom,
hiába, a restaurált mozgás nem az igazi,
ha a kezem javul, rángatódzik a szájam –
gerjesztett túlmozgás? a belső földrengés jele?
Megszereztem az alig megszerezhető tudást,
a pallér biztos szemmértékét,
mely a kell és a lehet közé helyezi a semmibe
a levegőn támaszkodó és levegőt tartó gerendát:
az átgondolt jövő … a kacsalábon forgó vár …
Most, hogy megvan, tudhatom azt is, nem jó semmire.
A költészet színes gyógyszerét szedve nézem
a véren vett házhely gyöpén forgó lángoszlopot.

I take with me Matisse's palette at every mealtime:
tablets, capsules, glaring Fauve colours;
the spectrum of life is fading, I retouch with cru colours in vain,
restored movement is not real movement,
if my hand improves, my mouth begins to twitch -
kindled hyperactivity? Sign of an inner earthquake?
I acquired that almost unattainable skill,
that rule of thumb of foremen, by which they push into thin air
and place between the needed and the might be needed,
a plank that leans on and supports but air:
the thought-out future … rotating fairy castle ...
Now that I have it, I know that it lacks worth.
I watch, whilst taking the colourful medicine of poetry,
the rotating column of flame on the sod of the blood-bought building-site.
