Oravecz Imre: Old age (Öregség in English)

Portre of Oravecz Imre

Öregség (Hungarian)

1

Mi fiatalon ismeretlen volt,
az most mindennapos,

2

Néha olyan,
mintha én nem én lennék,
hanem valaki más,
egy nehézkes, űzött idegen,
ki a bőrömbe bújt.

Old age (English)

1

What was unknown in youth,
is now commonplace,
what once was game is now difficult or beyond me,

If I squat down, then stand, blood rushes to my head,
if I look down from a height I get acrophobia,
If I want to sew I now - even with glasses - can't put thread through the needle,
when I converse with someone, I forget what I wanted to say mid-sentence,
if I have to change something I had planned, I get nervous,
if I don't find something, I panic,
if a part of me hurts, I immediately think of the worst,

my life became an adventure.

2

Sometimes it is as if
I were not I,
but someone else,
a dull, driven stranger
inhabiting my skin.
