Petőcz András: The past returns (Visszatér a múlt in English)

Portre of Petőcz András

Visszatér a múlt (Hungarian)

Valahonnan mélyről jön fel a múlt,
a múlt, ami voltam.
Jön felém, és én
itt fekszem, holtan.
Valahonnan távolról üzennek ők,
ők, akik nincsenek már.
Integetnek, és kiabálnak,
de megkötöz a halál.
Ki voltam, és mivé lettem?
Egyetlen perc az egész –
Valami elsuhant felettem.
Döbbenten nézem, hogy közelednek,
mindazok, akik én voltam itt.
S látom, hogy a testem egyre csak lapít.

The past returns (English)

The past is rising from somewhere in the deep,
that past which I used to be.
I died and here I’m lying,
whilst it's approaching me.
They're sending word from some remote place,
they, who had drawn their final breath.
They wave and shout at me, whilst
I lie here, trussed by death.
Just who am I, and who the ones I’d been?
Merely a moment elapsed -
then something had swished through the sheen.
I'm stunned as I watch them approaching,
all those who were me once, and hence,
I see that my body’s demise is pretence.
