Weöres Sándor: The redheaded maidens (Vöröshajú lányok in English)

Portre of Weöres Sándor

Vöröshajú lányok (Hungarian)

Vöröshajú lányok, mint a gondolat
Felröppennek éjjel holdvilág alatt.

Este vizet hoznak, szalmát, tüzifát,
Sürögnek, kacagnak, mint a jó család.

Kisöprik az udvart, csak úgy bizsereg,
Ki hinné, hogy éjjel hol vannak ezek!

Manci, a nagyobbik füstön lovagol,
Joli most bújik ki az eresz alól.

Vöröshajú lánnyal ne kezdj sohasem!
Fogjátok meg, ott száll, viszi a szívem!

The redheaded maidens (English)

The redheaded maidens, like thoughts idly strewn,
Take flight in the night-time neath the shining moon.

Come evening they're fetching water, straw and wood,
They bustle and titter like good families should.

They're sweeping the courtyard tingling clean - no grime, -
Who'd believe, when night comes, where they spend the time!

The older one, Manci, rides smoke as it leaves,
Joli's just emerging from beneath the eaves.

With red-headed maidens 'tis best not to start!
Catch her, there she's flying, carrying my heart!
