Farkas Árpád: The garden gnome (A kerti törpe in English)

A kerti törpe figyeli a házat,
füleli el-elhaló hangjait.
Félek, hogy készül már a magyarázat,
amellyel eltűntet majd megint valakit.

A kerti törpét ide ti hoztátok,
őrizni bazsarózsát, rezgő rezedát.
Arról volt szó, csak őrzi e világot,
és persze nagyon meghúzza magát!

A kerti törpe figyeli a házat,
le s föl sétál az ablakom alatt.
Egy intésére százak somfordálnak
elő, és körbeforog e hitvány törpehad.

The garden gnome is minding our place,
harkens to sounds that one can barely hear.
I fear he's putting reasons now in place
for causing someone else to disappear.
 
It was you who brought this garden gnome here,
made him guard for peonies, mignonettes.
We said he would just guard the world, and no fear,
keep to himself, no arguments, regrets.
 
The garden gnome is minding house and garden,
is neath my window, up and down he roams.
But he can call forth hundreds, should he harden:
a vile and swirling army of the gnomes.
