Kányádi Sándor: November Flowers (Novemberi virágok in English)

Novemberi virágok (Hungarian)

Csak a parki virágok
mosolyognak még.
Élteti őket a kötelesség
s a vágy,
hogy szépek legyenek,
amíg csak le nem hull a hó.
Színüket kiszítta már a nap,
s illatukat a deres hajnalok.
De azért virágok ők!
Hervatagon is hősen
viselik az őszt,
s döbbenet
nélkül várják a telet.
Akárcsak
az unokáikat sétáltató nagymamák
akik egy-egy rövidke, biztató
mosollyal visszaintenek
a virágok hervatag mosolyára…

S valami zsibbasztó könnyűség
száll a
szürkülő tájra.

November Flowers (English)

Only the flowers in the park
are still smiling.
They’re kept alive by the duty
and the desire
to remain beautiful
until snow starts falling.
Their colours are already faded by the sun,
and their fragrance by hoary dawns.
But yet they are flowers!
Withered, though, still bravely
they’re wearing autumn,
and no bewilderment
at all as they’re waiting for winter.
Just like
grandmas with their grandchildren,
walking and waving back now and then
with a brief, encouraging little smile
to the withered smile of the flowers…

And a kind of numbing lightness
settles
on the darkening landscape.
