Kányádi Sándor: Childhood (Gyermekkor in English)

Portre of Kányádi Sándor

Gyermekkor (Hungarian)

Hóharmaton mezítláb jártam,
ólmos esőben bőrig áztam;
éjjel az erdőn, félelmemben,
hol sírtam, hol meg énekeltem.

S mindez úgy tűnik - most, hogy emlék
mintha egy tisztás szélén mennék
fütyörészve, hol alkonyatkor
őzek ittak ezüst patakból.

Childhood (English)

I walked in bare feet through hoar and rime,
was soaked by the sleet from time to time,
at night in the woods, when struck by fear,
I’d shed some tears, then my song you'd hear.

Meseems these all are now memories,
as if walking a clear midst the trees,
whistling, where deer came at dusk and took
cool drinks from a sparkling silver brook.
