Elõbb csak háztól házig verték,
azután ki a faluból.
Most két falu között tétován
hol ide, hol oda lohol.

Bátor kutya volt, eleinte
még meg-megkapta a botot.
S nézzétek:
hogy elgyámoltalanodott!

A madártól is félrerebben,
állandó reszketés ina,
foga is már csak azért van, hogy
legyen mivel vacognia.

Szederjes nyelve vizet keres,
megvesz, ha nem talál.
Szája két felén undorítón
vegyül a könny s a nyál.

Sír. Vonyítana, de azt se mer,
hátha meghallja valaki. –
Menti a bõrét céltalanul,
míg bírják vérzõ lábai.

Menti a bõrét céltalanul.
Csak a bõre van, semmi más. –
Hol késel,
irgalmas vadász!?

First they chased him from house to house,
then, from the village banished.
Now he roams the country roads, timidly
to and fro, panting, famished.

He was a courageous hound, at first,
now and then he’d draw the cane.
Look at him now:
how defenseless he became!

He’ll flinch from the tiniest bird,
all sinews, trembling,
what few teeth he has left, rattle
like an old tambourine.

His purple-parched tongue seeks water,
He’ll go mad, without.
Vile tears and drool collect on the
corners of his mouth.

Cries. He’d howl, but dares not,
lest someone hear, out there. — 
Saves his own hide, without purpose,
long as his bleeding feet will bear.

Merciful hunter,
hasten your stride!
