Baka István: Raskolnikov's nights (Raszkolnyikov éjszakái in English)

Portre of Baka István

Raszkolnyikov éjszakái (Hungarian)

Már elmerült az alkonyat
A csatornák piszkos vizében,
Pétervárt a sugárutak
Kötéllel verik a sötétben.

Az éjszaka, csillagait
Vonszolva, mintha lánca volna,
Előbotorkál, s én a csörgő
Lombokat hallgatom szorongva.

A hold Pugacsov koponyája,
Repedt vigyorgás odafenn,
A mélyben bőgés, kocsmalárma,
Baltaként rándul meg szivem.

Vak koldus a bérház sötétje,
Nyújtja az udvar tenyerét,
Fölötte csillagok kelése
Fakad. Mert koldusarc az ég.

Raskolnikov's nights (English)

By now the dusk already sank
Into canals, their filthy waters,
Radiating avenues beat
With ropes dark Peterburgish quarters.

The night appears with stars in tow,
As if dragged chain-like through the scene,
Comes stumbling forth and I anxiously
Keep heeding the jingle of the green.

Pugachov's skull is the moon above,
it seems there's a crack in the grin,
From below come bellows from the pub,
And axe-like's my heart’s flinch within.

Blind beggar-dark is the tenement
As it proffers its palm: the yard,
Stars rising burst in the firmament.
For a beggar face has the sky.
