Juhász Gyula: Village wedding (Falusi lakodalom in English)

Falusi lakodalom (Hungarian)

Nyárfák ezüstjén hold ezüstje reszket,
Piros borok a fehér asztalon.
A hegedűknek a tücskök felelnek
Hívatlanul a szőke asztagon.

A mókás vőfély verset mond a nászról,
Violát, rózsát, mindent összeszed
És csillagot, szerelmet, cifraságot.
Kalácsot kér a majszoló gyerek.

Az ágyasházban tornyot rak az anyjuk,
Kakukkos óra éjfelet kakukkol,
A szútól halkan megroppan a bútor.

S míg künn az udvaron garázda dal zug,
Üveg alatt gunnyaszt, mint néma bú,
Egy fonnyadt menyasszonyi koszorú.

Village wedding (English)

Trembling moon-silvers on poplars' silver lie,
On the white table are red wines - no lack.
As violins play, the cricket songs reply
Unbidden from a blonde-hued drying stack.

Best man, with humour, recites a wedding rhyme,
Talks "violets", "roses", piles it on – a treat –
And "stars" and "love", line after garnished line.
A munching child's demanding cake to eat.

On the love-bed their mother builds a tower,
The cuckoo clock, it calls the midnight hour,
Furniture's creaking as borers devour.

And whilst in the yard a rowdy song repeats, –
Like silent sorrow – glass lid and beneath,
There lies a wilted bridal wedding wreath.
