Juhász Gyula: Wedding Feast at Tápé (Tápai lagzi in English)

Portre of Juhász Gyula

Tápai lagzi (Hungarian)

Brummog a bőgő, jaj, be furcsa hang,
Beléjekondul a repedt harang,
Kutyák vonítanak a holdra fel,
A túlsó parton varjúraj felel.

Brummog a bőgő, asszony lett a lány,
Az élet itt nem móka s nem talány,
A bort megisszák, asszonyt megverik
És izzadnak reggeltől estelig.

De télen, télen a világ megáll
És végtelen nagy esték csöndje vár,
Az ember medve, alszik és morog.
Benn emberek és künn komondorok.

Brummog a bőgő, elhervad a hold,
Fenékig issza a vőfély a bort,
Már szürkül lassan a ködös határ,
És a határban a Halál kaszál…

Wedding Feast at Tápé (English)

The bass is grunting, glory! weird the sound,
The cracked bell joins in, now the sounds abound,
The moon the dogs howl sits above the sky,
Across the river crows cry in reply.

The base is grunting, girl became a wife,
Neither a puzzle, nor a game is life,
They drink the wine down and the wife they smite,
And raise a sweat from morn till fade of light.

But winter halts the world, it shuts the gates,
And silence of the endless nights awaits,
The man-bear sleeps, the sound of grunts abounds,
Inside are people, outside are the hounds.

The bass is grunting, the moon loses shine,
The best man drinks the last drops of the wine,
Slowly bourne's mists are greying with the morn
And the Grim Reaper is reaping the bourne...
