Radnóti Miklós: [Upon a jabbering palm-tree] ([Zsivajgó pálmafán] in English)

Portre of Radnóti Miklós
Portre of Ország-Land, Thomas

Back to the translator

[Zsivajgó pálmafán] (Hungarian)

Zsivajgó pálmafán
ülnék legszívesebben,
didergő földi testben
kuporgó égi lélek.

Tudós majmok körében
ülhetnék fenn a fán
és éles hangjuk fényes
záporként hullna rám;

tanulnám dallamuk
és vélük zengenék,
csodálkoznék vidáman,
hogy orruk és faruk
egyforma kék.

És óriás nap égne
a megszállt fák felett,
s szégyenleném magam
az emberfaj helyett;

a majmok értenének,
bennük még ép az elme, -
s talán ha köztük élnék,
nekem is megadatnék
a jó halál kegyelme.

[Upon a jabbering palm-tree] (English)

Upon a jabbering palm-tree
crouching, I should be rather,
a free soul in earthly matter,
shivering, away from heaven;

where sage scholastic apes
would keep me company,
their sharp calls, like a shiny
shower, wash over me;

and I would chant with the team
in a merry cacophony,
and cheer the harmony
of their rumps and noses whose shades
of blue would seem the same...

Above the enchanted tree
a giant sun would pace,
and I would be ashamed
for the human race:

the apes would grasp my pain,
for still, the apes are sane –
and Oh! in their company
if I might share their merciful
good death beneath that tree...
