Áprily Lajos: Rasmussen's ship (Rasmussen hajója in English)

Portre of Áprily Lajos

Rasmussen hajója (Hungarian)

Páncél szügyét a fergetegnek
halálra-szánt daccal szegi.
Virágos kikötőre gondol:
ezer kendő intett neki.

Jól tudja, egyszer nincs menekvés,
az útnak vissza-útja nincs.
Örök zátonyra fogja testét
a diadalmas jégbilincs.

Megyek a Rasmussen hajóján,
zivataros fedélzeten,
s mint Childe Harold, a partra küldöm
jóéjt kívánó énekem.

Olykor keresve visszanézek:
szép volt az élet? Nem tudom.
Köd-óriások kergetőznek
mögöttem a sötét úton.

Kiáltanék az éjszakába,
kiáltásomra nincs "hahó".
Kísértetes magányosságba
siklik a páncélos hajó.

Ahol kiköt, fehér öbölben
virág és asszony nem terem.
A jég zengése zúg alattunk,
a jég zengése végtelen.

Szívem fölött egy déli emlék
tévedt sugara átoson.
Lengő fekete lobogóval
Valaki vár a póluson.

Rasmussen's ship (English)

The armoured breast of the raging storm
he breaches, is prepared to die.
He thinks of the harbour bloom-bedecked;
a thousand kerchiefs waved good bye.

He knows full-well there's no escaping,
returning roads cannot be trekked.
In jubilant fetters of ice will
his body forever be wrecked.

Upon Rasmussen's ship I'm sailing,
out on the deck in wind and rain,
like Childe Harold, I'm sending shoreward
my wish in song: good night again.

At times I'm casting glances rearward,
was life a ball? Can't call to mind.
Fog-giants romp, they chase each other
in the dark of the road behind.

I would be shouting into the night,
no answer comes to my distress.
The armoured vessel keeps on gliding
into an eerie loneliness.

White bight of ice is where it will berth,
were women and flowers don't grow.
Creaks of the ice-floe sound from below,
and endless the creak of the floe.

A southern memory stalks my heart:
lost ray of thought that I recall.
With a black flag that flutters and flies,
someone is waiting at the Pole.
