Benő Attila: Gábriel (Gábriel in English)

Portre of Benő Attila

Gábriel (Hungarian)

Nyúlánk, a göndör szőkeség maga,

mindenki másnál hosszabb a haja:

ő a párttitkár-százados őrangyala.

Az erdélyi szilvalével

mindig hatásosan érvel:

enyhül a parancsok szigora,

nő a kivételezettek sora.

Hajnalban Gábriel ajtót nyit lassan,

és sértőn zengedező himnusz harsan.

Egyetlen gombnyomásra

oszlik az álom-pára.

Harsogás és üvöltés.

A porlepte hangfal sivákol:

sértő a váratlan tolongás,

és messzebb szökik a távol.

A visszakényszerített sok élő kísértet

hontalanított létbe sorakozni lépked.

Parancsszóra kezdődik hamar

hajnali nemzeti hangzavar.

Gábriel nem tornászik

novemberi fagyban

vagy sáros latyakban.

A százados-irodánál

neki sok dolga van:

szolgál, csetlik-botlik, ágál.

Hajtja a mély hála.

Nagyokat köpve,

csizmát fényesít

a himnusz szavára.

Gábriel (English)

He's blondness itself, he’s slender and fair,

and longer than anyone else's his hair:

he gives the captain-party-secretary guardian angel care.

With plum brandy, views he vents,

are impressive arguments:

strictness of commands will ease,

and those with privilege increase.

At dawn, Gabriel slowly opens the door,

and strident the burst of the hymn for the corps.

One only press of a button, it seems,

is quickly dissolving the fog of our dreams.

There's blaring and howling aloud.

The dusty loudspeaker crackles and screeches,

offensive and sudden the rush of the crowd,

and far-off's escaping to more distant reaches.

Living ghosts, forced back, - no use resistance -

fall into line in their stateless existence.

A word of command is hitting the senses,

a babel of nations with sunrise commences.

For Gabriel no calisthenics

in November frost

or slush at any cost.

The captain's office work awaits,

there's much to do for him, he serves,

and knocks about and agitates.

Gratitude drives him from within.

Twixt copious spitting,

he's shining some boots

to the words of the hymn.
