Kormos István: My star (Csillagom... in English)

Portre of Kormos István

Back to the translator

Csillagom... (Hungarian)

Szárnyas cseléd az anyám
Elment a Tejútra,
Kócos angyalok ingét
Kék teknőben mossa.
Szőke kontya kibomlik,
Haja száll a szélben,
Teregeti a ruhát
Napsugár-kötélen…

Mosásért az angyalok
Csillagokat adnak,
Ezüstöst és ragyogót
Kötényibe raknak.
Boldogan viszi szegény,
Bandukol a porban,
S megáll gyönyörködni a
Kapott csillagokban…

Kiveszi a legszebbet
Csöndben a kötényből,
Mutatja a fiának:
Énnekem az égből.
Azt a fényes csillagot
Lesem minden este,
Így láthatok a sárból
Szegényen is mennybe…

My star (English)

My mother is a winged maid
upon the Milky Way,
she washes angels' shirts in
a blue tub every day.
Her blonde bun unravels,
wind-blown, ever higher,
whilst pinning the wet washing
on a sunray wire…

As pay the angels give her
a star for every chore,
put each shiny silver thing
into her pinafore.
The poor dear, happy, takes them,
saunters through dust relieved,
then stops to look, admire,
the stars she had received…

She selects the prettiest
out of her pinafore,
shows it to me, her son, from
that far off heaven's door.
That is the star I look for,
that's my nightly sighting,
that's how I, though dirt poor, have
heavens to delight in…
