Szilágyi Domokos: Winter (Tél in English)

Portre of Szilágyi Domokos
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Tél (Hungarian)

Kitalálta a halált,
széppé tette, hogy ne lássam,
s hogy ne sírjak, könnyeimet
gyönggyé fagyasztotta.

A fák büszkén viselik
angóra lombjaikat,
szelíd-karmú cinkelábak
alatt jég-xilofon csetten. –

Csontja ezüst jégből,
bőre tejút-hideg gyolcsból
(szagtalan-szigorú-szép liliom):

jön, jön a hópihe-szirmú,
szememet lefogja.
Megjöttél, kicsike? De meg ám.

Winter (English)

Invented death,
beautified it, so I would not see it,
and froze my tears to pearls
so I would not weep.

The trees proudly wear
their mohair foliage,
a xylophone of ice chirrups
neath gently-clawed legs of titmice. -

Its bones are silvery ice.
its skin a Milky-way-cold linen
(scentless-stern-beautiful lily):

it comes, it comes, that snowflake-petalled one,
it closes my eyelids.
Did you arrive my little one? Sure did.
