Szilágyi Domokos: In anger (Haragban in English)

Portre of Szilágyi Domokos
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Haragban (Hungarian)

Ráztál is, mint csörgőt a gyermek,
óvtál is, mint anya fiát;
bűn volt az is, ha megölellek,
s bűn volt távolról nézni rád?
táncoltam én is és te is,
sírtál értem, s miattad is,
szemünkben zöldellt a harag,
míg egyszer rajtakaptalak,
hogy szeretsz; s én is tettenérten
pirultam el. Azóta értem,
hogy kettőnk kölcsönös dühe
nem fog elmúlni sohase.

In anger (English)

Like children rattlers, so you shook
yet shielded me like mothers do a son;
Was hugging sin? And could a look
I gave from far off also count as one?
I danced, you danced: both teary eyed,
for me, and for yourself cried,
our eyes with greening rage were packed,
until I caught you in the act
of loving me, then I in turn
had blushed, and since then I discern,
that this anger trait we're sharing
will for evermore be flaring.
