Bak Rita: In the garden (A kertben in English)

Portre of Bak  Rita

A kertben (Hungarian)

A kertben
derékszögben törtek meg
a fénynyalábok.
Vártam, mikor térnek be hozzám;
csúsznak le a szakadt tapétán.
Napokig nem jöttek.
Kutyám gombszemekkel
nézett rám a szemközti fotelből,
csuklott egyet, mintha biztatna,
tarts ki, jönnek majd.
Még az ablakokat is megpucoltam.
Hátha könnyebben bejutnak.
A haszontalan várakozásban
elbóbiskoltam.
Bejött anyám a konyhából.
Fogd meg a karfát – mondta
Apád ma délelőtt
meghalt.

In the garden (English)

The sheafs of light
broke at right-angles
in the garden
I waited for them to come in;
to slide down on the torn wallpaper.
For days they did not come.
My dog, wide-eyed, looked at me
from the armchair opposite,
made a noise as if to encourage me:
be patient, they will come.
I even cleaned the window.
Perhaps they'll get in more easily.
Then I dozed off
with all the useless waiting.
My mother came in from the kitchen.
Grab the chair, she said,
your father
died this morning.
