Halmai István: Penelope (Penelopé in English)

Portre of Halmai István

Penelopé (Hungarian)

Naphosszat kémlelem a tengert,
szemem belefájdul az erőlködésbe,
míg befogja a víz fölött
egy vékonyka csíkját a végtelennek.

Ténfergek az öböl
         medúzáktól koszoszöld
                  tükre fölött,
őgyelgő semmittevők,
        agresszív zsibárusok,
                fecsegő hülyék közt a parton.

Karácsonyodik.
Ma csak néhány hajó érkezett,
az utolsó is bevitorlázott alkonyatra
nélküled,
ércznél súlyosabb rakományával
a hiányoddal –

Penelope (English)

Daylong I spy the sea,
my eyes are hurting from the strain
until, above the water, they settle on
a narrow line of the infinite.

I idly stroll about
above the mirror of the bay
made a dirty green by jelly fish,
among the loitering layabouts,
      aggressive junk merchants
and jabbering half-wits on the shore.

It is getting towards Christmas.
Only a few ships arrived today,
the last one, too, had berthed at dusk
without you,
with a heavier-than-ore cargo:
your lack –
