Demény Ottó: Some lines to poetry (Vers a költészethez in English)

Nem kértelek csak elfogadtalak,
mert dolgozni akartam s te jutottál
nekem, hogy mint többiek e földön,
megőrizhessem én is magamat.

Már férfi voltam, tudtam ízeit
a mély örömnek s múló szenvedésnek,
így engem nem tudtál becsapni,
mint lelkendező kamaszaidat.

Mert azt tettem csak, amit tenni kellett
s ritkán éltem díszes játékaiddal.
Versz, mint a tenger a part köveit,
összesimulunk s megállítalak.

És így lesz mostmár ameddig csak élek.
Nem haszonért s nem hiúságokért,
de mert te vagy a dolgom, amit egykor
vállalnom kellett s vállalok örökkön.

I did not seek you, just accepted you,
as I had wanted work and you were there,
and like the rest upon this earth,
I sought in truth to just preserve myself.
 
A man by then, I knew the flavours
of the deep joys and miseries that pass,
so you failed, you just could not mislead me
the way you do your rhapsodising teens,
 
Because I only did what needed to be done
and rarely played in all your fancy games.
You beat me like the ocean does the shore,
together we cling, and then I call the halt.
 
That's how it will be whilst I'm still alive.
Not for the gain and not for vanities,
but because you're work that once I had to,
and will from now on always undertake.
