Ady András: Inspiration (Ihlet in English)

Portre of Ady András

Ihlet (Hungarian)

Attól a kis fekete ponttól,
mely minden írásom végére
odakellemetlenkedik, a parányi
végtől, amely a soha be nem
fejezettet előre elrendeltnek
tűnteti, a fikarcnyi halálélménytől
miszerint rólam, helyettem már
ott (felfelé mutatok) mindent
leírtak …

a nyavalyás írásjeltől, hol
a mondandó végleg elfogyhat,
nem tudok szabadulni.

Csak ha neked írok, csak ha te
olvasol, érzem néha úgy: nem
ért véget itt semmi, talán el sem
kezdődött még, ami máskor,
állandóan be akar már fejeződni …

Inspiration (English)

From that small black mark,
which makes a nuisance of itself
at the end of everything I write,
that tiny end which parades
the never to be finished as
pre-ordained, from that skerrick of
death-experience according to which
they (I point upwards) have already
recorded all about me...

from that damned punctuation mark,
where all that is to be said can finally run out,
I cannot escape.

Only when I write to you, only when
you read me, do I sometimes feel that
nothing here has ended, perhaps that, which
at other times would have always wanted to end,
may not even have begun ...
