Bari Károly: You Think (Azt hiszitek in English)

Portre of Bari Károly
Portre of N. Ullrich Katalin

Back to the translator

Azt hiszitek (Hungarian)

Azt hiszitek, hogy csak én
ácsorgok fényért és szeretetért
a város kapuja előtt,
én korbácsolom a ziháló szél
hátát átkaimmal és üvöltöm az égig
kivetettségem siralmait:
tizenhat évem nem elég
arra, hogy befogadjatok,
nem elég arra, hogy fejemről letépjétek
a megaláztatás pókhálóit?

Sokan várjuk a kapukon kívül,
hogy bizalmatok rézkrajcárjaival
megajándékozzatok!

You Think (English)

You think it’s only me
standing about for light and for love
before the port of the city,
I thrash the panting wind’s
back with my curses and roar to the sky
the laments of my being outcast:
are my sixteen years not enough
for you to accept me,
not enough for you to rip off from my head
the cobwebs of humiliation?

There are many of us waiting outside the ports
for you to present us with coppers
of your confidence.
