Kiss Judit Ágnes: (Ap)peal* (Szó in English)

Portre of Kiss Judit Ágnes

Szó (Hungarian)

Hazádból, hogyha még bírod,
Ne menj el, ó, magyar.
Hogy menekülj, lesz mindig ok,
És mindig, hogy maradj.

Itt áldozat, s vajon mi ott?
Bevándorló lehetsz,
Nem tudhatod, végül melyik
A súlyosabb kereszt.

Ez a föld régóta ugar,
Terméketlen, sivár,
De van még, ki zenét szerez,
És színházat csinál,

Szeret és harcol semmiért,
Mert másként nem tehet.
Hogy itt vagy, erőt ad nekik,
S ők itt vannak veled.

Lehet, hogy nem jön jobb soha,
Ki itt él, mélyrepül.
Megúszhatják a vétkesek,
S te bűnhődsz vétlenül,

Míg annyi jóval van tele
A másik serpenyő,
Ha baj van, ki ne mentené,
Ami még menthető?

De itt van szükség rád nagyon,
Sötétben lenni fény,
Hogy fölemeld, ki megrogyott,
És bátorítsd, ki fél.

Maradj, mert meg kell védeni,
Kinek nincs is hova,
Legyen szegény, hajléktalan,
Zsidó, meleg, roma,

Vagy bárki más, aki alól
Kihúzták a talajt.
Légy fül, ha semmit nem tehetsz,
Ki hallja még a jajt.

Ez frontvonal, ez harcmező,
S még így is otthonod,
Rád simul minden rég bejárt
Tered, kamaszkorod.

Taposhatnak röhögve mind
Az összes elveden,
De szétolvadnak a szavak
Az anyanyelveden.

Ne hidd, hogy semmi eszközöd,
Fegyver vagy te magad,
Mind különleges ügynök az,
Ki mégis itt marad.

Maradj tövisnek, bőr alatt,
Ha bírod még, magyar,
Légy viszkető seb, mit a kéz
Álmában is vakar.

Itt áldás is, másutt csak egy
Bevándorló lehetsz.
Ki mondja meg, végül melyik
A súlyosabb kereszt?

(Ap)peal* (English)

Your homeland, if you can still endure,
Do not leave, oh, Magyar.
There are always reasons to flee,
And reasons to stay on.

Here a victim, and out there what?
An immigrant perhaps,
You never know which in the end
Is the heavier cross to bear?

This land has long been a wasteland,
Desolate and barren,
But some here still compose music,
And make theatre performance,

People who love and struggle for nothing,
For that’s all they can do.
That you are here – confirms them,
And they are here with you.

It may not get any better,
Those living here hedgehop.
The guilty may shun punishment,
You guiltless pay for it all,

While the other scale-pan abounds
With such plenty of good,
If there is trouble, who wouldn’t save
What they in fact still could?

But you’re so badly needed here,
To be light in darkness,
To gather up the ones let down,
Encourage the frightened.

Stay, because there ought to be saved
Who can’t flee to any,
Either they are poor or homeless,
Jewish, gay, romany,

Or anyone who had the ground
Cut from under their feet.
Be ears, if that’s all you can do,
Still to hear suffering.

It’s a front-line, it’s a battlefield,
Even so it’s your home,
All familiar squares nestle to you,
Sites of your teen-age roams.

Laughing rudely others may trample on
All your principles today,
But the words in your mother-tongue
Will be melting away.

Don’t think you have no means at all,
You’re a weapon yourself,
All those are but special agents
Who stay still here instead.

Stay to be a thorn under skin,
If you still endure, Magyar,
Be an itching wound that the hand
Even in sleep scratches up.

Here also blessing, but elsewhere
Just immigrant perhaps.
Who can say now which in the end
Is the heavier cross to bear?

*The Hungarian title Szó (Word) is the first syllable of the original title of the Hungarians’ second national anthem: Szózat by Mihály Vörösmarty. One of the meanings of „peal” may slightly give back the original idea – the serious thoughts echoed in the twenty-first century about loving your homeland, being at home only here where you were born.
