Hajnal Éva: If (Ha in English)

Back to the translator

Ha (Hungarian)

Ha reggel jönnél hozzám,
Isten öleléséből font széken kínálnék helyet,
hajnali napfényt töltenék poharadba.
Amint kortyolgatnád,
elúsznának melletted a felhők,
válladon pihennének a madarak.

Ha nálam ebédelnél,
tányérodba rejteném az erdők titkait.
Ebéd után felolvasnék neked.
Minden mesék legszebbikét olvasnám,
hogy közben elszunyókálhass.
Nézném, hogy emelkednek
és süllyednek mellkasodon aranygombjaid.
Suttogásommal takargatnálak.

Ha velem vacsoráznál,
megénekelném neked a mezők illatát,
s a pacsirtával együtt dalolnék,
ha itt maradnál nálam hajnalig.
Tücsökzenéből készíteném ágyad,
tiszta folyókból szőném takaród.
… selymek csendjével
rajzolnám tenyeredbe,
a Teremtő mosolyát.

If (English)

If you came to me in the morning,
I’d offer you a chair woven from God’s embrace,
I’d pour the sunshine of dawn into your glass.
As you’d be sipping it,
the clouds would be floating beside you,
birds would have a rest on your shoulders.

If you had lunch in my home,
I’d hide the secrets of woods in your plate.
After lunch I’d read out something to you.
I’d read the most beautiful of all tales
and you could slumber a bit.
I’d watch the golden
buttons rise and sink on your chest.
Like a blanket, I’d lay my whispers on you.

If you had supper with me,
I’d sing to you the fragrance of meadows,
and I’d sing together with the skylark
if you satyed with me until daybreak.
I’d make your bed from cricket-songs,
weave your blanket from clean rivers.
... with the silence of silk
I’d draw into your palm
the smile of the Creator.
