Fekete Anna: The Rose, Yes (A rózsa, igen in English)

A rózsa, igen (Hungarian)

A rózsa a versekben íztelen-szagtalan.
Vagy kékes a fénye,
tündöklő-bársonyos a szirma,

támadó szél is irgalmatlan hozzá,
gyerekek csipdesik a szirmait.

Hát nem érdemelne többet?

Olyan tehetetlenül,
olyan visszavonhatatlanul
rózsa.

The Rose, Yes (English)

In poems the rose is flavourless, scentless.
Or it glimmers in blue,
its petals are gorgeous and silky,
or it’s simply beyond reach.

But this silly, little, yellow rose at the side of the square
with all those stubs and coke-cans around
knows nothing of it.
Its face is scratched by knees rushing past,
it just grows without ecstasy or glory,
and even the afternoon
cruel wind is ruthless to it,
children keep picking its petals.

Shouldn’t it deserve much more?

It’s so helplessly,
so irrevocably
a rose.
