Birtalan Balázs: This morning (Ez a reggel in English)

Portre of Birtalan Balázs

Ez a reggel (Hungarian)

Úgy bukkant elém ez a reggel,
mint fűbe rejtett piros tojás.
Ma nem találom a végzet sorait.
Tavaszi a kávé, a cigaretta.
Szelíd vakkantással kéredzkedett kezembe
tollam, ölembe füzetem – ama félig írt.
A tegnapok s holnapok közti rést szétfeszíti,
betölti e csütörtöki ajándék-vasárnap.
Kint villamoszörgés, verébricsaj,
mint bármikor ezelőtt, ezután,
de most pasztellszínekkel csusszannak felém,
s félretéve bölcs miérteket,
engedem csak, hogy átitassanak,
hogy szivarzsebébe dugjon a jelen.

Ezen a reggelen nem vagy itt,
és mégis itt vagy, és fogod a kezem.

This morning (English)

This morning popped in front of me
like a red Easter egg hidden in the grass.
Today I can’t find the lines of destiny.
Spring things are coffee, cigarettes.
My pen and my notebook - half filled - begged
with gentle barks for a place in my hand, my lap.
This gift Sunday on a Thursday widens, fills the gap
between the yesterdays and the tomorrows.
Tram noise, ruckus of sparrows outside,
like at any time before or since,
but now, pastel coloured, they slip towards me
and putting wise whys aside,
I just let them permeate me, so
the present may tuck me into its top pocket.

This morning you are not here,
and yet you are here, and you hold my hand.
