József Attila: Hunger (Éhség in English)

Portre of József Attila

Éhség (Hungarian)

A gép megállt. Elfáradt por kering
fölötte, mint az őszi köd meg pára,
s rászáll az emberek hajlott nyakára,
kik esznek most. Átizzadt szennyes ing

hűl a vállukra. Fal, fal egyre mind.
Kenyér s uborka az ebédjük mára
s mind úgy eszik, ne vesszen csöpp se kárba
s hogy jót harap s hozzáharap megint.

Már nem törődnek semmit az idővel.
A harapások majdnem összeesnek,
de jól megrágnak minden falatot.

Egészséges, még jó paraszttüdővel
szívják, rágják a port, szénaszagot
s csak esznek, esznek, nem beszélnek, esznek.

Hunger (English)

Machine had stopped. The tired dust, it girths
the air above like dewy autumn haze, then
flies and lands upon the bowed necks of the men
who're eating now. Their sweat-soaked dirty shirts

cooling on shoulders as they gorge and stuff.
Bread and some gherkins, that is their lunch today,
with care they're eating, nothing gets thrown away:
bite after bite until it’s deemed enough.

They are unhurried, as if with time to kill.
Bites seem to tire, teeth are slowly meeting,
but they're chewing each mouth-full very well.

With their peasant lungs that are good, healthy still,
they chew and breathe the dust of hay, the smell,
and keep eating, in silence keep on eating.
