Questo silenzio fremo nelle strade,

questo vento indolente, che ora scivola 

basso tra le foglie morte o risale 

ai colori delle insegne straniere... 

forse l’ansia di dirti una parola 

prima che si richiuda ancora il cielo 

sopra un altro giorno, forse l’inerzia, 

il nostro male piú vile...La vita 

non è in questo tremendo, cupo, battere 

del cuore, non è pietà, non è più 

che un gioco del sangue dove la morte 

è in fiore. O mia dolce gazzella, 

io ti ricordo quel geranio acceso 

su un muro crivellato de mitraglia. 

O neppure la morte ora consola 

piú i vivi, la morte per amore?

Ó, ez az utcákba rekedt csönd,

ó, ez a gondatlanul suhanó szél,

mely lent mocorog halott levelek közt,

vagy felszáll az idegen zászló színeire…

Talán a szorongás késztet,

hogy szóljak ma veled a tegnapi napról,

talán a tunyaság, a mi

leghitványabb nyavalyánk…

A szívnek rettenetes, tompa verése

könyörületre szomjúhozik,

hiába: az élet már a vér játéka csupán,

hol a halál virágzik. Ó, én édes gazellám,

emlékedbe idézem a muskátlik tűzpiros foltját

a falon, mit kicsipkéztek a géppuska-golyók.

Ó, jaj, hogy a halál sem vigasztalja többé

az élőket, a halál azokért, akiket szeretünk.
