Pace dei campi, requie della morte.
Qua presso, in cima al poggio, è il cimitero.
Olivi in giro; e veglia su le porte
un drappel di cipressi ispido, nero.

O morti, il bujo della vostra sorte,
mi fa sembrar comprese del pensiero
mio stesso queste frondi aspre, contorte,
e l'aria intorno, piena di mistero.

Mi volgo a ogni romor lieve che fanno
gl'insetti e i fili d'erba a quando a quando,
avviluppati in quest'arcana noja.

Ma ecco, a un tratto, squilla come un bando:
sono gridi d'uccelli ebbri di gioja,
che né di voi, né della morte sanno.

Halál nyugalma ez: némán köszöntse
ajkad a néma temetőt a dombon.
Körül olajfák; s a kapukat csöndbe
ciprusok őrzik, borzasan, borongón.

Ó, holtak, sors sötét ölébe lökve
szunnyadtok! Állok itt s ezt súgja gondom:
én vagyok e göcsörtös ág-özön s e
titok-nyűgözte táj: itt vagyok otthon.

Egy-egy bogár ha moccan, vagy fűszálak
rezdülnek, odafordulok e fáradt
körben, mit sűrű lombfüggöny határol.

De hirtelen hangok hulláma árad:
sikong örömtől mámoros madárhad,
mely nem tud sem rólad, sem a halálról.
