Második bornholmi elégia (Magyar)

Mintha létezhetne egy szilárd pont. Itt van pedig, e hínáros parton,
elhagyottan. Függeszd fel most kérdéseid. Hasztalan lapozza a szél
minden könyvek minden oldalát. Az időnek nincs jelenléte, csak
anatómiája a sziklák vésetében. Se ige, se bűvszó, mi eljuttathatna
súlyos mértanukba. Hagyd hát el tudományod: semmit sem ér, hiszen
varázslat, mit e szirtekbe gondolok. Bennük él, és a mi figyelmünk
mindig túlságos, avagy alkalmatlanul csekély. A ritkán fölszakadó
nyárvégi köd is többet tud a mozdulatlan csodákról.

Lehet bár nyers a kő, vagy verejtékkel darabjaira vágott: a geológia
folyvást megcsúfoltatik. Alapja ez a földnek; nem málladéka. Gránit,
melyben nincsen isteni szöszmötölés a szénvegyületekkel.
Én csak a szívem mérem. Nem hozzájuk vagy általuk: csendjük az,
mit magamra gombolok. Jól elférek e helyen; én, akinek szüntelen
szűk a láthatár. Felejthetek végre magyarázatokat, a bölcsességek
mindahány összegyűlt mondatát. Szólnak mégis.

„- Hontalanná tetted perceid; beszüntetted az emberi lényeget. Kővé
válsz te is. Üldögélj a parton, morzsold a habokba könnyes titkaid.
Hidd csak: fölháborulnak az örök-sós tengerek. Ne kérdezd, hányadik
vagy a tévelygők között.”

Tagadjak-e? Nem; én, a lélek vagyok itt, és mosollyal halok bármikor.
Ráérek, hiszen nincs holnap, mi naptárba írható. Talpam becézi a finom
homok; hangafüvön pihen fejem.

Tudom, ígéret vár; egy hívás, mi megtalál. Figyelem addig a susogást,
az álmokat; a csöndes árapályt. Térdig vízben hallgatom a sötétség
sorsomat.

Aki kérdezni tud, elmondom annak e képtelen messzeséget. Elmegyek
most, nehogy elfelejtsem. Visszaszáll az álom a szilárd pont híján
sodródó világ zajos tereibe.

Second Bornholm Elegy (Angol)

As if there could exist a fixed point. And yet here it is, on this shore covered in sea-weeds, abandoned. Stop asking questions now. The wind turns all pages of all books in vain. Time has no presence, except for its anatomy in the cracks of rocks. There’s neither word, nor magic word to take us into their heavy geometry. Abandon your knowledge: it’s worth nothing, since it’s magic I fancy to see in these rocks. It lives inside them, and our attention is always either too excessive or improperly trivial. Even the thinning late-summer mist knows more about motionless miracles.
The rock may though be rough or cut into pieces with lots of sweltering efforts: geology is being mocked all the time. The core of the earth, and not its crumbled remnants. Granite, in which there’s no divine fiddling around with carbon compounds. I’m just measuring my heart. Not against or by them: it’s their silence I’m buttoning onto myself. There’s enough room for me here; for me, who constantly finds this horizon too narrow. I may at last forget explanations and all the accumulated sentences of wisdom. Yet they’re speaking.
„You’ve made your minutes homeless; you’ve terminated the essence of being human. You’ll also turn into stone. Just sit about on the shore, crumble your tearful secrets into the waves. You may believe: the forever-salty seas will get into a rage. Don’t ever ask where you’re ranked among the misguided.”
Should I contradict? No; I am the soul here present, and I’ll die smiling any time. I’m in no hurry, since there’s no tomorrow to write in the calendar. My feet are fondled by fine sand, my head’s resting on heather grass.
I know future holds promise for me; a calling is bound to find me. Till then I listen to the whispering, the dreams; the silent tide. I listen to the legends of darkness in knee-deep water, and in order to be the master of spoken word later, I abandon all human words. It’s imperfect knowledge, but it’s the only proper alchemy. Twilight-billions dazzle my eyes; and fields of rocks unveil my fate in the northerly night.
I’ll tell anyone able to ask about this absurd distance. I’m leaving now so as not to forget. The dream will return to the noisy places of a world adrift lacking a firm point.
